FAQ
Is this pickup an authentic DiMarzio product?
Due to our vast product line and years of history in the guitar accessories market, occasionally counterfeiters both in the USA and around the world attempt to duplicate our products and sell them falsely under the DiMarzio® brand name. If you are uncertain about whether the new or used item you want to buy is authentic, please contact us with either a photo of the product you're looking to buy or a link to an online listing, if available. The experts in our tech department will be able to help you assess whether the item is genuine.
Does a pickup’s DC resistance indicate tonal response or output?
No. DC resistance is not a direct indicator of tone or output. DiMarzio uses Resistance measurements to verify that a pickup is wound to the correct specification based on the type and length (number of turns) of magnetic wire used in a pickup’s design.
Our Output (mV) is a better representation of a pickup’s relative loudness compared to other DiMarzio pickups.
Our EQ chart, along with the description, provides a better representation of the tonal response.
WHAT DIMARZIO PICKUPS DID KURT COBAIN USE?
Kurt Cobain’s 1965 Jaguar was purchased from the Recycler classifieds in 1991 and already had two double cream DiMarzio humbuckers installed when he bought it: a PAF® in the neck and a Super Distortion® in the bridge. This guitar can be seen in numerous concerts and in Nirvana’s famous Saturday Night Live performance of "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
WHAT DIMARZIO PICKUPS DID RANDY RHOADS USE?
The first Randy Rhoads Sandoval V guitar featured a Super Distortion® in the bridge and a PAF® in the neck. The instrument, made by Karl Sandoval to Randy's exact specifications, was completed in September 1979.
I have an old DiMarzio® pickup that I’m trying to identify. Can you help?
The easiest way to identify an old pickup is to look for a model number on the back. Some of our early models were not identified by model numbers, and some of our OEM models have a different numbering system. See the question, "Do you still make...?" for a full list of pickup models.
We can usually help if you send us an email that tells us enough about the pickup, preferably including a photo of both the front and back of the pickup.
Please try to answer the following questions in your email, especially if you are not able to provide photos of the pickup in question:
How high should I adjust my pickups for the best sound?
There is no specific distance that works best for everyone. We measure string height from the top of the polepiece to the bottom of the string when the string (usually the high or low E) is held down at the highest fret. For standard, full-size humbuckers, a reasonable starting point for the bridge pickup is at least 1/16" (1.5mm) from the high E and 5/64" (2 mm) from the low E. There are no recommended distances for the other 4 strings.
Do I have to use a "neck" pickup in the neck and a "bridge" pickup in the bridge position?
Terms like "neck" and "bridge" models aren't meant to be rules. The only rule that's good to follow is to not put a pickup in the neck position that's louder than the bridge pickup. String vibration is stronger at the neck position, so it may be difficult or impossible to balance neck and bridge pickups if the neck pickup is louder than the bridge pickup.
How long does it take to get special order pickups?
Generally, orders for pickups in standard colors leave our factory within three days of order submission (and often faster than that). Items in non-standard colors or configurations may take up to five business days to leave our factory depending on production demand. As of 2020-2021, lead times may be further extended due to COVID-19.
Orders are fulfilled on a first come, first serve basis, and larger orders may require additional lead times. Please contact us for further information on turnaround times if you require an item within a specific time frame.
Can I get the ____ model that you made for a guitar company?
We are occasionally able to sell some OEM pickups directly to customers, or to make a recommendation as to which other pickup in our retail line would most closely resemble it. For additional information, please contact our tech department at [email protected].
How do I connect a 4-conductor pickup?
For normal series-humbucking wiring, solder the black and white wires to each other and insulate that connection with tape. The red wire is the hot output and the green and bare wires go to ground, usually by soldering them to the back of a pot. If the pickup sounds "out-of-phase" when played with other pickups, use the green as hot and connect the red and bare to ground.
What is a DiMarzio® ClipLock® Guitar Strap?
DiMarzio® ClipLock® Quick Release strap system is the most secure and unique fastening method available. The cornerstone of the ClipLock® strap is the heavy-duty acetal clip that allows you to change it easily from guitar to guitar with a little fingertip pressure, yet has enough holding power to meet military specifications. The ClipLock® fastens permanently between your guitar body and strap buttons with two sturdy brass bushings and extra-long screws (included). DiMarzio® ClipLock® straps adjust in length from 43 to 63 inches (110-160 cm), measured between the strap buttons.
7-string version of a 6-string pickup?
Several of our 6-string models are available in 7-string versions of the same name. Additionally, our Blaze™ neck model is very similar to an Evolution® neck model, and our Blaze™ bridge model is very similar to a Steve’s Special™. All 7-string models that we presently offer are listed on the 7-String pickup page; we are unable to make custom 7-string versions of any other 6-string pickups at this time.
