FAQ
What are Airbuckers?
Airbuckers are full-sized humbuckers that contain a gap or space between the magnet and the polepieces. The distance is quite small, and may be filled with nothing but air or by some non-magnetic material. The purpose of the gap is to lessen the magnetic field over the pickup, which in turn lets the string vibrate more freely. This results in a purer, more open sound and improved sustain.
Can I order a pickup with a plug-in base, like those on the Music Man Majesty or Ibanez 7-string Iron Label guitar?
Many of our 6-string, 7-string, and 8-string full-size humbuckers are available for order with a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) base that features a 5-pin connector which mates with an included 4-conductor cable and makes our pickups truly plug-and-play. There is an extra charge of $10 List Price for this type of base, and these pickups may be ordered new by calling or emailing us directly. However, existing pickups with standard bases cannot be retrofitted with a PCB base and plug-in connector after purchase.
DiMarzio®/IBZ pickups
The DiMarzio®/IBZ pickups are specifically designed and manufactured by DiMarzio® for Ibanez, and they are not available separately. Like all DiMarzio® pickups, they are made in our New York factory. Both neck and bridge pickups are high-output models. The neck pickup is fairly bright-sounding, similar to a Super 2™ (DP104). The bridge pickup is a little louder and warmer-sounding, and resembles a cross between the Steve Morse Bridge Model™ (DP200) and the Super Distortion® (DP100).
Do I have to use a "neck" pickup in the neck and a "bridge" pickup in the bridge position?
Terms like "neck" and "bridge" models aren't meant to be rules. The only rule that's good to follow is to not put a pickup in the neck position that's louder than the bridge pickup. String vibration is stronger at the neck position, so it may be difficult or impossible to balance neck and bridge pickups if the neck pickup is louder than the bridge pickup.
I have humbucking pickups in my guitar, but I hear noise when I take my hand off the strings.
Humbucking pickups are designed to reduce low-frequency hum from the power lines at 50 - 60 hertz. However, there are often rooms with sources of noise at higher audio frequencies. This “hash” can be distinguished from “hum” by noting that it changes when you adjust your tone control, while line frequency “hum” hardly changes at all. Humbucking pickups do not completely eliminate this high frequency noise.
Do you still make?
Below is a complete list of DiMarzio® pickups produced since 1972. If you are trying to find out what pickup you may have, the numbers are on the back, and this list may be used as a cross-reference. Most are available to order today, however there are discontinued models that may be special ordered through the DiMarzio Custom Shop.

DP101 - Dual Sound® - Available
How do I connect a 4-conductor pickup?
For normal series-humbucking wiring, solder the black and white wires to each other and insulate that connection with tape. The red wire is the hot output and the green and bare wires go to ground, usually by soldering them to the back of a pot. If the pickup sounds "out-of-phase" when played with other pickups, use the green as hot and connect the red and bare to ground.
What happens when two pickups are out of phase?
When two pickups are out of phase with each other, there is significant signal cancellation across the guitar’s entire frequency range. This results in a hollow sound and a drop in output. However, two pickups are never either completely in or out of phase, because they are located under different parts of the string, and are therefore cancelling different frequencies. The specific distance between the 2 pickups and the specific pickup models will affect how much cancellation occurs. The out-of-phase output drop is most apparent with a dead-clean amp setting.
Can I get a DiMarzio® humbucker with a factory-installed metal cover?
Select the Pickups link at the top of this page and navigate to the model that you want. Scroll down to the Color Options section. If metal covers are listed in Color Options, then you can get this model with a factory-installed metal cover.
What is a DiMarzio® ClipLock® Guitar Strap?
DiMarzio® ClipLock® Quick Release strap system is the most secure and unique fastening method available. The cornerstone of the ClipLock® strap is the heavy-duty acetal clip that allows you to change it easily from guitar to guitar with a little fingertip pressure, yet has enough holding power to meet military specifications. The ClipLock® fastens permanently between your guitar body and strap buttons with two sturdy brass bushings and extra-long screws (included). DiMarzio® ClipLock® straps adjust in length from 43 to 63 inches (110-160 cm), measured between the strap buttons.
Should I use 250K or 500K controls?
Regardless of what type of pickups are in your guitar, higher potentiometer resistance values produce a little more power and treble response. Whether this is a good or a bad thing is a matter of individual taste. In the early days, Gibson used 500K controls and Fender used 250K, thereby starting the single-coil = 250K, humbucker = 500K theory. Even though neither company has stuck strictly with this formula since then, the theory lives on.
What's the difference between a Super Distortion® and a Dual Sound®?
In our current production, there is no difference whatsoever, but we include a 500K push-pull pot with the Dual Sound®. Our original Super Distortion® had 1 conductor plus shield. We introduced the Dual Sound® with three conductors plus shield to allow more wiring options. As guitar manufacturers and players became more sophisticated, the market demanded four conductors plus shield on all humbuckers, so both models now have four conductors, as do all of our full-size humbuckers.
