FAQ
DiMarzio®/IBZ pickups
The DiMarzio®/IBZ pickups are specifically designed and manufactured by DiMarzio® for Ibanez, and they are not available separately. Like all DiMarzio® pickups, they are made in our New York factory. Both neck and bridge pickups are high-output models. The neck pickup is fairly bright-sounding, similar to a Super 2™ (DP104). The bridge pickup is a little louder and warmer-sounding, and resembles a cross between the Steve Morse Bridge Model™ (DP200) and the Super Distortion® (DP100).
Should I use 250K or 500K controls?
Regardless of what type of pickups are in your guitar, higher potentiometer resistance values produce a little more power and treble response. Whether this is a good or a bad thing is a matter of individual taste. In the early days, Gibson used 500K controls and Fender used 250K, thereby starting the single-coil = 250K, humbucker = 500K theory. Even though neither company has stuck strictly with this formula since then, the theory lives on.
Will you exchange this for a different color?
If your DiMarzio® single coil-size pickup has a replaceable plastic cover, you can order a replacement cover in the color you want by contacting our sales department. However, in all other cases, "right model, wrong color" does not qualify for a free exchange, which is intended only for performance issues. Our full warranty and exchange policy can be found here.
What is a distortion pickup?
All magnetic pickups produce a clean signal with no distortion. Distortion is produced either in the amplifier or in effects pedals or rack effects. When a pickup is said to produce distortion, it indicates a pickup with high output, which more easily drives amplifiers into distortion. An amplifier with a totally clean channel or clean setting may not distort at all, even with a high output pickup.
What happens when two pickups are out of phase?
When two pickups are out of phase with each other, there is significant signal cancellation across the guitar’s entire frequency range. This results in a hollow sound and a drop in output. However, two pickups are never either completely in or out of phase, because they are located under different parts of the string, and are therefore cancelling different frequencies. The specific distance between the 2 pickups and the specific pickup models will affect how much cancellation occurs. The out-of-phase output drop is most apparent with a dead-clean amp setting.
How high should I adjust my pickups for the best sound?
There is no specific distance that works best for everyone. We measure string height from the top of the polepiece to the bottom of the string when the string (usually the high or low E) is held down at the highest fret. For standard, full-size humbuckers, a reasonable starting point for the bridge pickup is at least 1/16" (1.5mm) from the high E and 5/64" (2 mm) from the low E. There are no recommended distances for the other 4 strings.
What's the difference between a Super Distortion® and a Dual Sound®?
In our current production, there is no difference whatsoever, but we include a 500K push-pull pot with the Dual Sound®. Our original Super Distortion® had 1 conductor plus shield. We introduced the Dual Sound® with three conductors plus shield to allow more wiring options. As guitar manufacturers and players became more sophisticated, the market demanded four conductors plus shield on all humbuckers, so both models now have four conductors, as do all of our full-size humbuckers.
Does it matter which direction I install my pickup?
Most humbuckers are symmetrical and their sound does not change at all when installed backwards. Humbuckers that are not mentioned in this FAQ sound the same when installed in either direction.
Do I need a Standard or F-Spaced pickup?
DiMarzio full-size humbuckers are available in two different spacings for better string-to-pole piece alignment. Guitar makers vary both their bridge and nut dimensions, and offshore production can also be different from USA versions.
Can I get a DiMarzio® pickup with a custom winding or a different polepiece style from standard?
At this time we do not do custom winding or hardware. However, you may not be familiar with some of our older models that are no longer listed, and one of these models may be just what you need. Please call or email our technicians for advice.
I have humbucking pickups in my guitar, but I hear noise when I take my hand off the strings.
Humbucking pickups are designed to reduce low-frequency hum from the power lines at 50 - 60 hertz. However, there are often rooms with sources of noise at higher audio frequencies. This “hash” can be distinguished from “hum” by noting that it changes when you adjust your tone control, while line frequency “hum” hardly changes at all. Humbucking pickups do not completely eliminate this high frequency noise.
