DiMarzio Model J™

DP123

DiMarzio Model J™ pickups reproduce the warmth and roundness of the traditional Fender® Jazz Bass® sound with increased power and hum-cancellation. The additional power translates into a bigger sound that emphasizes the resonant character of the instrument. The DiMarzio Model J™ pickup’s sensitivity and deep tone are also the perfect complement to fretless basses. Double-stop glissandos and delicate violin-style vibrato speak with a classic, woody voice simply by backing off slightly on the tone control.

Neck and bridge positions. The DiMarzio Model J™ was designed to fit the original Fender Jazz Bass, which has neck and bridge pickup cavities of two different sizes. Some current basses use the same length pickup in both positions. The DiMarzio Model J™ set, DP123, consists of two pickups of different lengths, with the neck pickup shorter than the bridge pickup. The pickups are also available individually as DP123S (short) and DP123L (long) if your bass requires either one size pickup or the other. Please refer to the dimensions link for the correct choice for your bass.

Tech Talk

Unlike traditional Js, each Model J™ is individually humbucking. It's not a stack: each coil picks up one pair of strings. By doing it this way, we keep the resistance down, and the tone clean and clear.

DiMarzio Model P®

DP122

Breathe new life into any bass by replacing its stock pickup with a DiMarzio Model P®. This hum-cancelling two-piece pickup brings big, punchy sound to Fender® Precision Bass®-style basses. The DiMarzio Model P® accurately reproduces the sound of your bass with added gain and solid tone. DiMarzio Model P® pickups cut through the band without sacrificing bottom-end power. Gutsy mid-range provides growl when the bass is pushed hard.

Model One™

DP120

Originally designed as a direct replacement for Gibson® EB series neck pickups, the Model One™ has found new life as a woofer/tweeter in multipickup bass setups. By combining the Model One™ with Split P™, DiMarzio Model P®, or DiMarzio Model J™ pickups, you can effectively turn your bass into a woofer/tweeter setup with on-board control of sonic extremes.

Warm, full tone, no mud. For maximum high-end response, try 500K controls. For even brighter and cleaner sound, try switching the coils from series to parallel: the volume drops a bit, but the midrange really opens up and acquires a more acoustic quality.

HS-3™

DP117

The HS-3™ has been the weapon of choice for Strat®-powered classical metal since the early 1980s. Far from being a high-output monster, the HS-3™ is actually a smooth and relatively quiet pickup that produces a sweet overdrive tone without jagged edges. These qualities combine perfectly with a heavily distorted amp, because the sound won’t get muddy or messy. The HS-3™ is also versatile — it’s a noise-free pickup in a live situation or in the studio.

Tech Talk

The HS-3™ works very well with high-gain amps, but the classic setup is with an overdrive pedal and a Marshall® amp. The pedal boosts sustain and distortion, and the sound cleans up dramatically when the pedal is switched off. Works well in all 3 positions on a Strat® for a slightly warmer-than-usual Strat® sound. Also works well as a bridge pickup with HS-4™ (neck) and HS-2™ (middle). Combines in middle and neck positions with bridge humbuckers like PAF Pro®, PAF®, Air Classic™, and Norton®.

HS-2™

DP116

The HS-2™ has history behind it. The HS™ series were the first humbucking Strat® replacement pickups we made in the early 1980s. Since then, the HS-2™ has become popular for two distinct qualities: in humbucking mode, it’s got a solid, natural sound that’s cleaner and brighter than a conventional humbucker, while single-coil mode creates one of the best vintage tones around. Because of its patented design, single-coil mode is not as noisy as a standard single-coil pickup.

DP112BK - Pre B-1™

Pre B-1™

DP112

There are two kinds of Tele® players: country pickers for whom twang is king (we don’t make Twang King™ pickups for nothing, right?), and players of blues and rock who need less high-end snap and more low-end muscle. We’re not talking imitation humbucker-sound here. The Pre B-1™ maintains a lot of the basic character of the Tele® bridge position, but the sound is bigger. It can still cut through a mix, but it will fill more space, as well.

Recommended For

Standard Tele® bridge position.

Tech Talk

Telecaster® guitars may seem very basic, but the differences in maple and rosewood fingerboards, body woods and even bridge and saddle materials mean there are a lot of different-sounding axes around, and some of them are very piercing. Rolling the tone down can turn the sound to mud. The Pre B-1™ attacks the problem by fattening up the highs and boosting the mids and lows. We've left the traditional bottom plate off — the Pre B-1™ was designed to work without it.

SDS-1™

DP111

It might look like a Strat® guitar pickup, but the SDS-1™ adds punch, gain, and warmth reminiscent of the best old soapbar pickups. The adjustable pole pieces don't pull as hard as regular rod magnets, so you can get the pickup closer to the strings for stronger output. The highs are less exaggerated and the bottom is deeper than most singles for a rounder, darker tone. If your guitar's bridge position sound is too edgy, without the push needed to drive your amp, remedy the situation with an SDS-1™.

Tech Talk

The bar magnets that power the SDS-1™ are ceramic, but the sound and feel are very similar to Alnico-equipped soapbars, partly due to the big steel pole pieces and spacer bar. This type of magnet structure also has noticeably less magnetic pull than standard rod-magnet pickups, even though the output is very high for a single-coil.

FS-1™

DP110

Some players find the traditional Strat® bridge pickup sound clear and sparkling, while others think it’s almost painfully bright. You know who you are, and the FS-1™ is for you. It’s louder (about 25% more power) than a stock single-coil, and smoother and fatter-sounding all-round. When you combine the FS-1™ in the bridge with True Velvet™ in the middle and neck, you’ll have a guitar with calibrated, balanced tone in all five switch positions.

Tech Talk

We didn't design the FS-1™ with a vintage sound in mind, but if you're trying to get a blues sound from the bridge position of a maple-neck Strat®, you'll be very happy with the extra mids and bass, and the sound still cleans up when the volume is rolled down.

Super 2™

DP104

If you love the sound of a Super Distortion® in the bridge and you like hot neck pickups too, try a Super 2™. The Super 2™ takes the classic Super Distortion® sound and slides the EQ up in favor of the high-end, so its brighter top and lighter bottom work to balance out the darker, overtone heavy information up by the fingerboard. The Super 2™ is just the pickup to clean up the overdrive sound of a mud-heavy 24¾’’ scale, two-humbucker guitar or to add snap to a dark sounding 25½” bolt-on.

Neck position with equal or higher-power bridge pickup. Bridge position with equal or lower-power pickup (PAF Pro®, FRED®, Evolution® Neck).

Tech Talk

This is a very bright bridge pickup, but the highest frequencies are rounded off enough to allow the pickup to cut without being too “buzzy” or metallic.

PAF® 36th Anniversary

DP103

Here are the characteristics that make a great vintage humbucker: a soft magnetic field, sweet tone, perfect balance between warmth and clarity, the ability to go from clean to distorted by pick attack alone. For our PAF® 36th Anniversary Neck we wanted to continue in the path of pioneers such as Seth Lover (designer of the original Patent Applied For humbucker) and create pickups that combine all of the characteristics of great vintage humbuckers. These pickups are not merely clones.

Tech Talk

There is no reference standard for the sound of a humbucker from the 1950s. All of them had variations in output and tone, and these differences could be quite large. Recently, we have focused our research on making pickups with warm highs and bright lows. This combination is only found in our favorite vintage humbuckers, and it’s really good for a pickup intended for both the neck and bridge positions. It allows the bass strings in the neck position to avoid muddiness, and the treble strings in the bridge position to be warm and not brittle.
