True Velvet™ Neck

DP175

It's not difficult to make a vintage single-coil pickup that's clean and bright, but not so easy if you also want the high strings to sound sweet above the 12th fret. The True Velvet™ Neck Model was designed to make this happen by tuning the coil to a frequency range that’s bright but not thin. We combined this with a magnet stagger specifically designed to enhance string balance, which produces great clarity, even with full chords. The True Velvet™ Neck Model comes standard with hand-ground magnets and vintage cloth covered wire.

Tech Talk

The True Velvet™ is a further development of our Blue Velvet™ line. We’ve re-tuned the basic frequency response to hone in on the strongest aspects of vintage single-coil tone. The best vintage single-coils emphasized a “sweet spot” where the sound is bright but not piercing. The True Velvet™ is tuned to this spot, making it equally effective for many playing styles, from the clarity of country music to the grit of Texas blues.

Twang King™ Neck

DP172

When we decided to go for the vintage Tele® sound, we knew we had to do more than just copy a forty-year-old design. We wanted pickups that captured the best elements of our favorite Broadcaster® and Telecaster® sounds – and then some. The Twang King™ pickups have unequalled response to pick attack: light playing produces a soft, quiet tone and hard picking creates a harder, louder, and more dynamic sound than any comparable single-coil. We accomplished this with a combination of controlled-tension coil-winding, special wire, and hand-calibrated magnets.

Tech Talk

We didn't model the Twang King™ neck pickup after a specific original because, honestly, we never found one we were 100% happy with. We were aiming for big, clean lows and highs, and we wanted the pickup to be able to handle a very wide dynamic range, so the sound would clean up with soft picking and really open up with a harder attack.

We didn't model the Twang King™ bridge after a specific original. Instead, we combined the best tonal qualities of several Broadcaster® and Telecaster® pickups from the 50s and early 60s. We were aiming for a balance between big, clean lows and fatter-sounding highs, and we wanted the pickup to be able to handle a very wide dynamic range, so the sound would clean up with soft picking and really open up with a harder attack.

Virtual P90™

DP169

The original single-coil “soapbar” design had a special sound; low notes were solid and not tubby — they had an almost “piano” tone quality — while high notes were fat all the way up the neck. We’ve always thought this was a devastating combination, and we naturally wanted to reproduce this sound without 60-cycle hum. In the end, we found the best approach was to use our patented Virtual Vintage® technology to create the Virtual P90™. The two coils are tuned to different frequency ranges and output voltages, so tone and balance can be tuned by adjusting pole piece heights.

Tech Talk

An obvious question is how the Virtual P90™ differs from the DLX-90™. The Virtual P90™ is a little more raw-sounding: high notes have a little more snap, and low notes more growl. If you have a fairly warm-sounding guitar and amp setup, the Virtual P90™ would be a good choice for neck and bridge positions. If your guitar is more on the bright side, try the Virtual P90™ in the neck and the DLX-90™ in the bridge. Not available in a "dog-ear" version.

Why do so many players love the old “soapbar” pickup? Probably because it’s the friendliest sounding single-coil ever. High notes are always fat, with just enough bite to cut through the mix. Low notes are bright, but not thin, and the tone stays even — all the way up the neck. Our version of this classic pickup also punches up the mids and tightens up the lows. The DiMarzio Soapbar™ comes in “soapbar” (black or cream) and “dog-ear” (black only) versions. The cover is included.

We've made a pickup that performs almost identically to the old ones, but we did it with a unique combination of ceramic magnets and iron loading, instead of the original Alnico magnets. We didn't do it just to be different — our pickup's magnetic field won't weaken with age, so the sound won't change in time.

DiMarzio Vintage Minibucker™ Bridge

DP241

Vintage minibuckers were known for being quiet and clean-sounding, but they also had a tendency to “stay in the speaker cabinet” and not offer a great deal of clarity. Our concept of a vintage minibucker bridge pickup calls for a sound that jumps out of the speaker when the strings are picked hard, with a round tone and no mud. If a PAF could fit in a minibucker cover, this is what it would sound like.

Tech Talk

Although this pickup was originally designed for the bridge position, it’s also an excellent neck pickup for players looking for a warm, jazz tone. It has a well-balanced overall sound, which allows it to work well in many different guitars and musical situations, and split mode produces a chimey, Strat-like sound. It’s not quite as loud as a PAF, but it reacts immediately when a string is picked hard, and it cleans up when the volume is rolled down. We pot our Minibucker in wax after the cover has been installed to eliminate microphonic squealing. We’ve also included 4-conductor wiring for greater sound options.

The Breed™ Bridge

DP166

If you’re a fan of Steve Vai, you’ve probably seen him playing an Ibanez® Jem guitar with the word “Pogo” taped on the face. Steve wanted one of his instruments to have a fat, classic humbucker sound to contrast with the hotter, screaming Evolution®-equipped guitars. These are the pickups we developed for him. The neck pickup is a bit louder and fatter-sounding than the PAF Pro® pickups that Steve used on his earliest Jems.

Tech Talk

The Breed™ was designed to warm up and smooth out the sound of 25½” scale trem guitars. It's got a lot more power than a PAF®, but it also has a finer "touch" than high-output models. Picking hard will generate a lot of voltage, but a softer attack will clean up the sound of an overdriven amp.

The Breed™ is a bit louder and fatter-sounding than the PAF Pro® pickups that Steve used on his earliest Jems. As a neck pickup, it has more than enough power to balance with high-output bridge pickups: it will work with The Tone Zone®, Super Distortion®, and Evolution® as well as The Breed™ Bridge Model. In the bridge position, it has a very warm, hot PAF® tone — really smooth, with nice harmonics.

Bluesbucker®

DP163

And now for something completely different: the Bluesbucker® looks like a standard humbucker, but sounds like a P90 and cancels 60-cycle hum as effectively as the average humbucker. This means any guitar with standard size humbuckers can now have the sound of P90s without altering the guitar in any way and without noise. Patented Virtual Vintage® and Airbucker™ technology let the Bluesbucker® “see” a narrow string window like a true single-coil, making it extremely sensitive to playing dynamics.

Tech Talk

The coil with the 6 adjustable slotted poles is the “hot” coil. The coil with the solid poles is along for the ride to cancel hum and look cool. Since one coil is doing most of the work, the direction the Bluesbucker® is installed makes an obvious difference in the sound. When the hot coil is closest to the bridge, the sound is brighter; towards the neck is warmer. Even though the look is a little nontraditional, we like the sound of the bridge pickup “backwards” (with the screw coil towards the neck). With a Bluesbucker® in the neck position with the screw coil towards the bridge (also “backwards”) the combined sound is Tele®-like. With the neck pickup in the more traditional direction, the combination is like two P90s. The Bluesbucker® comes with special wiring instructions.

DLX Plus™ Neck

DP162

When DiMarzio® first decided to introduce a humbucking replacement for the “soapbar” and mini-humbucker, we found that many players wanted a pickup with more power and definition. We wanted to preserve some of the clean and open character of the original soapbar, so we reduced the mids on the DLX Plus™ a little while making the lows tight and punchy and the highs strong and defined. The result is that the DLX Plus™ has power, but it’s not muddysounding. The Neck model has almost as much power as the Bridge model, with a leaner bass response so low notes sound more defined.

Tech Talk

We designated the DP162 a neck model because the low end is a little tighter and brighter than the DP154, so the two pickups function together as a gently calibrated set. However, it's also a pretty nasty bridge pickup — this is our production version of the mysterious Yamaha Q100, which is in both positions on the AES 1500. Cover dimensions: 3.38” x 1.38” x 0.75” (86 x 35 x 19 mm). Not available in a "dog-ear" version.
