DiMarzio Soapbar™

DP167

Why do so many players love the old “soapbar” pickup? Probably because it’s the friendliest sounding single-coil ever. High notes are always fat, with just enough bite to cut through the mix. Low notes are bright, but not thin, and the tone stays even — all the way up the neck. Our version of this classic pickup also punches up the mids and tightens up the lows. The DiMarzio Soapbar™ comes in “soapbar” (black or cream) and “dog-ear” (black only) versions. The cover is included.

Tech Talk

We've made a pickup that performs almost identically to the old ones, but we did it with a unique combination of ceramic magnets and iron loading, instead of the original Alnico magnets. We didn't do it just to be different — our pickup's magnetic field won't weaken with age, so the sound won't change in time.

DiMarzio Vintage Minibucker™ Bridge

DP241

Vintage minibuckers were known for being quiet and clean-sounding, but they also had a tendency to “stay in the speaker cabinet” and not offer a great deal of clarity. Our concept of a vintage minibucker bridge pickup calls for a sound that jumps out of the speaker when the strings are picked hard, with a round tone and no mud. If a PAF could fit in a minibucker cover, this is what it would sound like.

Tech Talk

Although this pickup was originally designed for the bridge position, it’s also an excellent neck pickup for players looking for a warm, jazz tone. It has a well-balanced overall sound, which allows it to work well in many different guitars and musical situations, and split mode produces a chimey, Strat-like sound. It’s not quite as loud as a PAF, but it reacts immediately when a string is picked hard, and it cleans up when the volume is rolled down. We pot our Minibucker in wax after the cover has been installed to eliminate microphonic squealing. We’ve also included 4-conductor wiring for greater sound options.

The Breed™ Bridge

DP166

If you’re a fan of Steve Vai, you’ve probably seen him playing an Ibanez® Jem guitar with the word “Pogo” taped on the face. Steve wanted one of his instruments to have a fat, classic humbucker sound to contrast with the hotter, screaming Evolution®-equipped guitars. These are the pickups we developed for him. The neck pickup is a bit louder and fatter-sounding than the PAF Pro® pickups that Steve used on his earliest Jems.

Tech Talk

The Breed™ was designed to warm up and smooth out the sound of 25½” scale trem guitars. It's got a lot more power than a PAF®, but it also has a finer "touch" than high-output models. Picking hard will generate a lot of voltage, but a softer attack will clean up the sound of an overdriven amp.

The Breed™ is a bit louder and fatter-sounding than the PAF Pro® pickups that Steve used on his earliest Jems. As a neck pickup, it has more than enough power to balance with high-output bridge pickups: it will work with The Tone Zone®, Super Distortion®, and Evolution® as well as The Breed™ Bridge Model. In the bridge position, it has a very warm, hot PAF® tone — really smooth, with nice harmonics.

Bluesbucker®

DP163

And now for something completely different: the Bluesbucker® looks like a standard humbucker, but sounds like a P90 and cancels 60-cycle hum as effectively as the average humbucker. This means any guitar with standard size humbuckers can now have the sound of P90s without altering the guitar in any way and without noise. Patented Virtual Vintage® and Airbucker™ technology let the Bluesbucker® “see” a narrow string window like a true single-coil, making it extremely sensitive to playing dynamics.

Tech Talk

The coil with the 6 adjustable slotted poles is the “hot” coil. The coil with the solid poles is along for the ride to cancel hum and look cool. Since one coil is doing most of the work, the direction the Bluesbucker® is installed makes an obvious difference in the sound. When the hot coil is closest to the bridge, the sound is brighter; towards the neck is warmer. Even though the look is a little nontraditional, we like the sound of the bridge pickup “backwards” (with the screw coil towards the neck). With a Bluesbucker® in the neck position with the screw coil towards the bridge (also “backwards”) the combined sound is Tele®-like. With the neck pickup in the more traditional direction, the combination is like two P90s. The Bluesbucker® comes with special wiring instructions.

DLX Plus™ Neck

DP162

When DiMarzio® first decided to introduce a humbucking replacement for the “soapbar” and mini-humbucker, we found that many players wanted a pickup with more power and definition. We wanted to preserve some of the clean and open character of the original soapbar, so we reduced the mids on the DLX Plus™ a little while making the lows tight and punchy and the highs strong and defined. The result is that the DLX Plus™ has power, but it’s not muddysounding. The Neck model has almost as much power as the Bridge model, with a leaner bass response so low notes sound more defined.

Tech Talk

We designated the DP162 a neck model because the low end is a little tighter and brighter than the DP154, so the two pickups function together as a gently calibrated set. However, it's also a pretty nasty bridge pickup — this is our production version of the mysterious Yamaha Q100, which is in both positions on the AES 1500. Cover dimensions: 3.38” x 1.38” x 0.75” (86 x 35 x 19 mm). Not available in a "dog-ear" version.

Steve’s Special™

DP161

Steve’s Special™ is a non-traditional approach to high-output bridge humbucking pickup design. Hot humbuckers usually concentrate most of the pickup’s power in a narrow frequency bandwidth for maximum impact. Using our patented dual-resonance design, Steve’s Special™ takes the opposite path, spreading the sound over a broad range. Bass and treble frequencies are boosted while the mids are pulled back, so the pickup’s power doesn’t kick a high-gain amp into overdrive as easily.

Tech Talk

Clean overdrive with high-gain amps. Steve’s Special™ is very effective in Dual Sound® and coil-splitting clean modes. For soloing, this is a very good pickup to play with a midrange-heavy amp: the mid-scoop in the pickup's sound keeps the initial pick attack clean, and the notes don't run together as much with legato playing, even with heavy overdrive.

Norton®

DP160

The sound of a Norton® is right between FRED® and The Tone Zone®. It’s got some FRED®-like harmonic overtones that can only be described as nasty, with more of the power and mid-range of the heavyweight Tone Zone®. The same patented dual-resonance design used in FRED® and The Tone Zone® delivers a sound that’s hotter and “bigger” than any vintage model, but not as loud as a distortion-class humbucker. Norton® might be our most versatile bridge pickup.

purchase options

Recommended For

Bridge position in all solid body guitars. Can also be used in neck position with higher output humbuckers.

Tech Talk

Norton® was originally designed to extend the tonal range and power of standard output humbuckers without going over the top. It's more modern than a PAF® sound: the benchmark Gibson® Les Paul®/Marshall combination yields more midrange crunch and high frequency pick harmonics than vintage-style pickups were capable of putting out. Norton® is really good for opening up the sound of mahogany set-neck guitars.

The Evolution® Neck and Bridge humbuckers are the result of two years of research to come up with the right sound for a very demanding player: Steve Vai and his Ibanez® Jems. Both pickups have our patented dual-resonance configuration to reproduce more harmonic overtones than conventional humbuckers.

Tech Talk

The Evolution® bridge pickup works best for soloing where the sound must cut through. Low notes are very tight, and the highs have a lot of presence, enabling the pickup to be heard in almost any situation. Obviously, the Evolution® was designed for Steve's Ibanez® Jems, but it can add a lot of punch and definition to Gibson® Les Pauls® and similar set-neck guitars - even the lowest bass notes really jump out of the amp, and feedback occurs easily with a wide range of harmonic overtones.

Both pickups are designed for maximum impact and power. The neck pickup is fat, punchy and loud. The bridge pickup is tight, aggressive and louder. Both pickups have our patented dual-resonance configuration to reproduce more harmonic overtones than conventional humbuckers.

The Evolution® neck model will work in almost all solid-bodies and most semi-hollow bodies as well.

Tech Talk

Obviously, the Evolution® was designed for Steve's Ibanez® Jems, but it can add a lot of punch and definition to Gibson® Les Pauls® and similar set-neck guitars - even the lowest bass notes really jump out of the amp, and feedback occurs easily with a wide range of harmonic overtones.
