Why Does Guitar Playing Means So Much to You?

Music in general has always been an emotional release for me. There is a deep connection there on many levels. I grew up a fairly shy person, so guitar playing became a form of expression that I was most comfortable with (I’m still that way to a certain degree today!) I think that the guitar as an expressive instrument has only just begun to scratch the surface of it's potential. I find it very exciting to work towards broadening that expression!

Why Do You Think Music Has Such an Affect on People?

Music can be extremely powerful in a lot of ways. I think it connects and resonates with our core fiber. It can lift us up or make it okay to cry. What can be more beautiful than a piece of music that brings us to tears or makes us feel 10 feet tall?

Brian Wilson—who in my opinion has created some of the most beautiful and heartbreaking melodies of all time—said it best: ”Music gives folks a safe place to explore their emotions.“

Amen, Brian.

What Musicians Made You Feel Something New from What They Played?

So many ”jaw-dropping moments“ to list! Every guitarist of my generation remembers the first time they heard Van Halen’s Eruption. I also vividly remember Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Texas Flood coming on the radio for the first time as I was driving … I had to pull over! Same with Steve Lukather’s solo on Boz Scagg’s Breakdown Dead Ahead.

Satriani, Vai, Eric Johnson, Larry Carlton, Pat Metheny, and Robben Ford also have affected me in similar ways; though seeing Jeff Beck live has to be the single most inspiring concert I've ever attended.
